The day the kitchen stops being a drawing and becomes real — and the day most first-timers freeze. Here is the exact sequence the cabinet maker’s own installers follow, from the first level line to the last handle, ordered so one person can actually manage it.
Cabinets look like the hardest part of a kitchen and behave like the most forgiving — if you respect two ideas. The wall gives you studs to hang from, and a level line gives you a truth to build to. Everything below is just those two ideas, applied in the right order, with your own two hands.
You will find confident tradespeople who swear by each. Some hang the uppers first so they are not leaning over a run of base cabinets all day; others set the base first so the walls give them something to measure from. Both are correct. There is no safety or structural reason to prefer one — it is installer’s choice.
This guide follows the manufacturer’s official order: base cabinets first. It is the sequence Flip’s own cabinets are documented with, and it keeps the reference lines simple. Wherever the other order changes a step, we say so.
Note: installation screws are almost never in the box. Buy them separately, and match the length to the job — too long and it pokes through the next cabinet.
Open every box against your design drawing first: right style, right code, right quantity, no shipping damage, and any pull-out or accessory parts accounted for. It is far cheaper to catch a wrong cabinet on the floor than on the wall.
Then remove every door. A loaded upper is heavy and awkward; with the doors off it is light, and you can see exactly where your screws are going. On a European (frameless) cabinet the hinge clips off in seconds — you only need to loosen the two mounting-plate screws, not all four — and the door lifts away. Set the doors and shelves aside, labelled, so they go back where they came from.
Flip cabinets are frameless: there is no face frame, so the front edge is just the ¾″ panel, and the door covers the whole box (full overlay) with only a couple of millimetres of reveal. Two things follow. When you join cabinets you screw sideways through the side panels, not through a frame. And your door gaps are set entirely by the hinges — there is no frame to hide behind, so a level box matters more, not less.

Screws, not cam-locks. Flip’s particle-board boxes are screwed together — sides into the bottom, back and top rails. Driven-in screws sit flush, showing just a head; snug, not gorilla-tight, or you strip the board.
Runners on the flat panel first. Lay each side panel face-up and screw the drawer runners on where you can see them, then stand it up — every runner screw lands on a specific pre-drilled hole.
Drawer box upside-down, then slide it in. Screw the box together bottom-up (so the driver goes straight down into the bottom & back), turn it over, and slide it onto its runners. The front goes on with two bracket fittings, four screws.
Build every box like this, label it by position and stack it aside, and install day becomes what it should be: lifting finished cabinets onto a level line, not solving a puzzle on the floor.
What they search at midnight “my kitchen floor isn’t level and nothing lines up” — the floor is the liar; a level line is the only truth in the room.
Find the highest point of the floor along your run and mark it on the wall. From that point, measure up 34¾″ and snap a level line — this is the top of your base cabinets, before the countertop goes on. Everything references this line: you bring each cabinet up to it. Chase the dips of the floor instead and your finished countertop will roll like a slow wave.
While you are marking, find the studs with your stud finder and draw a light plumb line at each one, carried up past where the cabinets will sit so the marks are still visible once a box is against the wall. Loaded cabinets pull hard on their screws; a stud is the only thing that keeps a cupboard full of dishes on the wall. Never trust drywall alone.
What they search at midnight “base cabinets rocking / gap behind the cabinet” — the adjustable feet kill the rock; a scribe kills the gap.
Always start with the corner cabinet when a run has one — it sets the geometry for everything beside it. Slide it into place and level it not with shims but by twisting its adjustable feet until the cabinet top meets your 34¾″ line and the bubble sits dead centre, front-to-back and side-to-side.
Bring the next cabinet alongside, level it the same way, then join the two: pre-drill from the inside of the side panel, pull the front edges flush with a clamp, and drive 30 mm screws sideways through the panels. If you are capable, join several cabinets into one run on the floor before fastening the whole thing to the wall — it moves faster and stays straighter. Check the level after every single box.
Then fix the run to the wall, because a base cabinet that is not screwed back will walk the moment someone leans on the counter or drags out a loaded drawer. Use #10 × 2½–3″ washer-head cabinet screws — not drywall screws, whose hardened, thin shanks snap under shear and have no head to bear on the rail. Two per stud, driven through the cabinet’s back mounting rail so they pass through the rail, the drywall, and at least 1″ into solid stud. Where the wall bows away from the cabinet, shim that gap before you tighten: pull a screw into an unshimmed void and it sucks the back of the box hollow, racking the cabinet out of square and throwing off every door above it. Where a run meets a wall or an appliance, a filler closes the gap. Set the sub-filler flush with the finishing filler, fasten them together with 30 mm screws, then pre-drill from the inside of the side panel — tuck those holes beneath a hinge or shelf-pin so they never show — and screw the filler to the cabinet. Finished end panels go on the exposed sides the same way.
If the kitchen has tall cabinets (a pantry or an oven tower), use the bottom panel as your levelling reference so the tall unit lines up with the base run beside it, not just with itself.
What they search at midnight “how to hang wall cabinets by yourself” — you don’t hold it. The wall does.
With the base cabinets in, draw your wall-cabinet line from the plan and — exactly like the pros in the factory video — screw a straight board to the wall along that line to act as a temporary ledger. Rest each cabinet on it, and the board carries the weight while your hands are free to level, clamp and drive screws. Start at the corner again.
Flip wall cabinets have three horizontal rails across the back — top, middle and bottom — and that is where your wall screws go. Pre-drill the back panel, keeping the screws within about 60 mm of each side, and drive them into the studs through the top and middle rails — the same #10 × 2½–3″ washer-head cabinet screws, two per stud, reaching a solid inch into the framing. Never drywall screws, and never drywall alone: the whole loaded cabinet, 30–50 lb for every foot of its width, is hanging on those few screws. Drive the top screw first — that is the one that stops the box falling while you square up the rest. Join neighbours with 30 mm screws through the sides, just like the base cabinets. Hang the doors and drawer fronts, then dial them in. On these clip hinges the adjustment screws move the door three ways — height, depth and side-to-side. Work in small moves (a screwdriver and a quarter-turn at a time beats a drill here) until every gap between doors is even and hairline-straight. That single consistent reveal is the detail that makes people ask who did your kitchen.
Handles go on last. Even seasoned installers drill a handle in the wrong spot, so make a simple drilling template from a scrap of thin panel and reuse it on every door. When you thread the machine screw in from the back, spin it backwards first until you feel it click into the start of the thread, then drive forward — it stops you cross-threading and shearing a screw off inside the handle.
Finally, cut the toe kick to length: clip the mounting hardware onto the cabinet feet, clip the square catches onto the back of the toe-kick board, and push it into place.
Wipe the dust out of every cabinet. Cover exposed screw heads with the little white stickers that come in the hardware, drop the corner trim caps where they belong, and stick a small bumper on the back corner of every door so it closes quietly. Then, in the maker’s own words: don’t forget to take the trash out of the kitchen.
Rule of thumb: if it is gas, water under pressure, or 240 volts — hand it off. A permit and a pro cost less than a leak behind a brand-new cabinet.
Referencing the floor instead of a snapped level line.
Driving screws into drywall and missing the studs — or the back rails.
Forgetting to twist the feet level, so one rocking base warps the whole counter.
Joining cabinets before the front edges are clamped flush.
A join screw that is too long, poking through into the next cabinet.

Both orders are valid — it is installer’s preference, with no safety difference. Flip’s official sequence puts the base cabinets first, starting at the corner; some tradespeople hang the uppers first so they are not leaning over a base run. This guide teaches the factory order.
Yes. Screw a straight board (a temporary ledger) to the wall along your level line and rest each cabinet on it — the board holds the weight so both hands are free to level, clamp and drive screws into the studs through the back rails.
Never follow the floor. Find its highest point, mark a level line 34¾″ up, and bring each base cabinet up to that line using its adjustable feet. The line is the reference; the floor is not.
Two kinds. 30 mm (1¼″) screws join cabinets to each other, driven sideways through the ¾″ side panels (¾+¾=1½″, so 1¼″ bites hard without poking through). For the wall, #10 × 2½–3″ washer-head cabinet screws — not drywall screws, which snap under shear — driven through the cabinet’s back mounting rails, two per stud, reaching at least 1″ into solid framing. Never into drywall alone.
They arrive flat-packed and are assembled before install. Each cabinet type has its own short assembly video; we cover assembly in its own section of this guide, then move to the wall.
It is all in the hinges. Because these are full-overlay doors on frameless boxes, the reveal is set entirely by the three-way adjustment screws on each clip hinge. Level boxes first, then tune each door a quarter-turn at a time until the gaps match.
Catch at least one stud if you possibly can, then carry the rest of the load with heavy-duty toggle bolts — each holds 50–100 lb in plaster or drywall. Better still, gang the cabinets into one stiff run, or first mount a ¾″ plywood or a 2×4 backing board to the wall and screw the cabinets to that. Never trust drywall alone to hold a loaded upper.
After. Install and level the cabinets, template and set the countertop, then tile the backsplash up to the underside of the wall cabinets. Tiling first risks cracked tile when the counter goes in, and makes the countertop harder to fit cleanly.
Usually yes, wherever the cabinets land — a base cabinet has to sit flush to the wall, and a baseboard holds it out by its own thickness. Score the caulk line first so the paint doesn’t peel, then pull or cut back only the sections the cabinets will cover. Baseboard on exposed end walls can stay.
Once you have the rhythm, a wall cabinet takes about 10 minutes and a base about 15; your first one or two take longer while you learn the steps, and corner, pantry and drawer cabinets take a little more. Assemble them all before install day so nothing slows the fitting.
The honest short list: a 25′ tape, a 4′ level (a laser level is the upgrade that pays for itself), a stud finder, a cordless drill and an impact driver, a countersink bit for pilot holes, at least two 6–8″ face clamps, a chalk line, a bundle of shims, a jigsaw for scribes and sink cut-outs, and a mitre saw if you are cutting toe kick and trim. Add a helper, a cabinet jack, or the ledger board trick for the wall run.
Yes. A base cabinet will not tip over on its own, but the screws hold it to the line you levelled it to and stop it walking when you lean on the counter or pull a loaded drawer. Two 2½–3″ cabinet screws through the back mounting rail into every stud the cabinet crosses. Shim any gap behind the rail first — otherwise the screw pulls the back of the box hollow and racks it out of square, and every door above it goes crooked.
It depends on the top. Stone (quartz or granite) is set on beads of silicone — its own weight does the rest and nothing is screwed through it. Laminate is screwed up from underneath through the corner blocks or top rails, with screws short enough that they cannot punch through the surface. Butcher block has to be allowed to move: figure-8 fasteners or slotted brackets let it expand across its width without splitting. Whichever it is, the cabinets have to be dead level before it goes on.
Yes, and it is easier than it sounds. Snap the island’s footprint on the floor, screw cleats (2×4 or plywood offcuts) just inside the lines into the subfloor, drop the island down over them and screw through the cabinet sides into the cleats. Skip it and the island slides every time someone leans on it. Do it before the countertop goes on — afterwards you cannot get at the inside of the boxes.
Screwed properly into studs, roughly 30–50 lb per linear foot — far more than most people ever load them with. The number depends on the fixing, not the box: screws in drywall alone will pull out under a stack of plates, no matter how good the cabinet is. That is the whole reason for the rule — 2½–3″ screws through the back mounting rails, two per stud, with toggles only where a stud genuinely is not there.
A standard opening is 24″ wide × 24″ deep × 34½″ high, and height is usually the culprit. Wind the dishwasher’s own levelling feet all the way down, and check what ate your clearance — new flooring laid over the old, or a thick countertop underlayment, are the usual suspects. Many machines also have a removable top panel worth about ½″. If the opening is too narrow, a frameless box gives you nothing to shave, so the fix is at the cabinetry: re-cut the filler or shift the neighbour. Measure the opening before you buy the appliance, not after.
Measure from the side wall and up from the floor to the centre of each pipe, transfer both numbers onto the back of the cabinet, and drill a small pilot from the outside through to the inside. Then cut the finished hole with a hole saw from the inside out — the blow-out lands on the back panel where nobody will ever see it. Make each hole about ½″ larger than the pipe so you have room to slide the cabinet home, and keep them in the back panel, well clear of the side panels — those are what the box’s strength lives in.
Two different problems. An outlet buried behind a base cabinet has to be moved by an electrician — boxes may not be enclosed and made inaccessible, and this is not a place to improvise. A floor register under a cabinet run must not simply be left blowing into the void: you get dust, condensation and a warm cupboard. Duct it out to a toe-kick grille with a toe-kick duct kit, or have the register relocated before the cabinets land. Both are plan-stage calls — discovering either on install day costs you the day.
Yes, but the fixing changes. Lath and plaster: the studs are still there, just deeper — use longer screws so you still get a full inch of bite past the lath, and pre-drill so the plaster does not blow out. Concrete, block or brick: forget studs. Drill with a hammer drill and a masonry bit and use sleeve or wedge anchors sized to the load, at the same two-per-rail spacing. On any of them, hold a short board up first and test a single fixing before you commit a whole run.
Because the wall is not straight. Nobody’s is — a bow of ¼″ over eight feet is completely normal, and that gap is not a mistake, it is precisely what fillers and scribes exist for. Do it in this order: shim behind the cabinet at the stud lines so the box stays square when you tighten the screw, then close what is left with a scribed filler or scribe molding, cut to follow the wall’s actual contour with a compass. What you must never do is drive the screws hard to pull the cabinet back against the wall — that racks the box, and every door above it goes crooked.
Before the countertop goes on: yes, easily. Back the screws out of the wall and out of the neighbouring cabinet, re-set the adjustable feet, re-clamp the fronts flush and screw it all back. After a stone top is bonded down: you are not moving the box, so you fix what the eye actually reads — re-adjust the doors so the gaps run straight, add scribe molding where the cabinet meets the wall, and re-scribe the toe kick along the floor. Both answers are the argument for the same habit: check level after every single box, not at the end of the run.
There is no single “right” order to a kitchen install. Base-first and walls-first both produce a perfect kitchen; the choice is about which is easier for you on the day. What is non-negotiable is the rest: reference a level line, land your screws in studs and rails, and check level after every box. Get those three right and the order barely matters.
Yes — prime and finish-coat the ceiling and walls first, then install, then touch up. Cutting a straight line against a finished cabinet run is far harder than rolling a wall you are going to cover anyway, and carrying boxes into a room marks fresh paint no matter how careful you are. Leave the backsplash zone until the countertops are fitted.
Three things do it. Hit the studs — two #10 × 2½–3″ washer-head screws per stud, at least 1″ of thread into solid wood, never a drywall anchor for a loaded cabinet. Screw through the mounting rails built into the back of the box, not through the thin back panel. And join the boxes to each other before you tighten everything down, so the whole run hangs as one stiff assembly rather than as separate boxes each pulling on its own screws.
