The fridge, the range, the hood, the dishwasher and the microwave decide half your layout — and every one of them has a clearance that is not optional. Here are the numbers, and the mistakes that cost a week.
Cabinets are flexible; appliances are not. A cabinet run can absorb a half-inch anywhere along its length, but a fridge that needs 36″ and got 35½″ simply does not go in the hole. So plan in this order: pick the appliances, write down their real numbers from their real spec sheets, and let the cabinets fill what is left.
What they search at midnight “my fridge doesn’t fit the cabinet opening” — almost always because someone planned around a category instead of a model.
“A 30-inch range” and “a 36-inch fridge” are shorthand, not measurements. Real appliances arrive at 29⅞″, or 35¾″ plus a hinge that needs another inch, or with a handle that sticks 2½″ proud of the door. Every manufacturer publishes an installation or “will it fit” sheet with the exact opening they require — width, height, depth, and the air gaps around it. Download it, print it, and plan from that page.
If you have not chosen the appliances yet, plan the standard openings below, and keep your shortlist to models that fit them. That is the whole reason those sizes are standard.

Three separate things have to be right, and people usually only check the first.
If the fridge lands beside a wall or a tall cabinet, add a 2–3″ filler on that side. It is one plain strip of finished material, it looks deliberate, and it buys the door the swing it needs. Do the same where a fridge meets a corner.
Counter-depth or standard? A counter-depth fridge has a box around 24–25″ deep, so it sits nearly flush with your cabinets and reads as built-in — you pay for that in cubic feet. A standard-depth fridge needs about 30″+ and will stand proud of the run by 5–6″. Neither is wrong; just decide before you buy the countertop, because a protruding fridge changes how the whole side of the kitchen looks.
The cabinet above. Over a fridge you want a short wall cabinet — typically 12″, 15″ or 18″ high. If you want the fridge to look built in, order that cabinet in a deeper 24″ box so its face lines up with the fridge instead of hovering a foot behind it. That single upgrade does more for a “custom” look than almost anything else on this page.
A freestanding or slide-in range drops into a 30″ gap in the base run — leave the opening at a true 30″, because ranges are built a whisker under. A slide-in model overlaps the countertop at the front edge for a seamless look and needs the counter cut accordingly; a freestanding model has finished sides and a back guard and simply slots in.
The anti-tip bracket goes on. Every free-standing range ships with one, and it screws to the floor or the back wall so the range cannot pivot forward when a child stands on an open oven door. It takes four minutes. Installers who skip it are the reason it is required.
What can sit above it. Building codes give combustible material — which means your cabinet — a vertical clearance of 30″ above the cooking surface. You may come down to 24″ only where the underside of that cabinet is protected (classically ¼″ insulating millboard covered in sheet metal), and an over-the-range microwave or a listed hood is engineered and certified to sit closer. Do not put a plain wooden cabinet 20″ over a burner because it looked good in a photo.
Drop-in cooktops are a different animal: the appliance sits in the countertop, so what matters is the cut-out (always smaller than the overall appliance) and what is directly underneath. Most cooktops need clearance below for their body and controls, which usually rules out a full drawer stack in that cabinet — check the spec sheet before you order a three-drawer base for that spot.
What they search at midnight “how high should a range hood be” — higher than you think for gas, lower than you think for electric.
Ducted or recirculating? Ducted is genuinely better: grease, steam and smells leave the building. Recirculating (a charcoal filter that blows back into the room) is what you use when there is no realistic path outside — an interior wall in a condo, for example. It handles smoke and some odour, and does nothing at all about humidity. If you can duct, duct. And note that very high-CFM hoods can need make-up air to avoid back-drafting other gas appliances; that is a conversation with your inspector, not a DIY guess.
An over-the-range (OTR) microwave is a hood and a microwave in one box. It hangs from the wall behind it and from the bottom of the cabinet above, so you must have a cabinet above it — usually a short 12–18″ one. Manufacturers typically call for the top of the microwave at least 66″ off the floor, which leaves roughly 13″ between the cooktop and the underside of the unit; always follow the paper template that comes in the box, because the mounting plate and the exhaust knock-out are model specific.
Its exhaust can usually be configured three ways — out the back, up through the cabinet, or recirculating — and you set that inside the unit at install time. Decide which one before you cut anything.
The honest trade-off: an OTR microwave is compact and cheap, but it is a mediocre hood and it puts a hot dish at eye level over a hot burner. If the budget stretches, a microwave drawer in a base cabinet or a microwave in a tall cabinet frees the wall for a real hood and is far kinder to short cooks. Whatever you choose, a built-in microwave needs its own trim kit and its own ventilation gaps — you cannot just slide a countertop model into a cabinet hole.
What they search at midnight “how to secure a dishwasher to a quartz countertop” — you don’t. You fasten it to the cabinets beside it.
A dishwasher sits in a 24″ gap in the base run, under a counter at the standard 34½″ box height, and it does not need a cabinet of its own — the two cabinets either side are the enclosure. Its own legs adjust so the top of the machine tucks under the countertop.
The one thing that catches everybody: the brackets on top of the machine are meant to screw up into a wooden countertop. With quartz, granite or any stone, doing that means drilling into the underside of a slab that is not yours to gamble with — and stone chips. Instead:
If the dishwasher lands at the end of a run, it needs a finished end panel beside it — there is no cabinet there to hide the gap and to screw into. And a panel-ready dishwasher takes a door in your kitchen’s own finish, ordered with the cabinets; you cannot decide that afterwards.
A 30″ sink base takes most single bowls; a 36″ base is the safe home for a large single or a double. What matters is not the sink’s outside dimension but the bowl: it has to clear the cabinet sides, and on a frameless cabinet you have the full internal width to play with. Add an inch of margin and you will never regret it.
The sink base is also where the plumbing lives, so it has no drawer and usually a removable or notched back for the trap and the supply lines. Cut those holes on site, once the cabinet is standing in place and you can see exactly where the pipes come out of the wall — measure from the finished floor and the cabinet side, drill a small pilot, and open it up with a hole saw. Cut generously; nobody will ever see the back of that cabinet.
Plan the waste pull-out next to the sink, not across the kitchen — it is the second-most-used “appliance” you own. And if you are adding a filter tap, an air switch or an instant-hot tank, punch those countertop holes at fabrication, not later with a diamond bit and a prayer.
Everything an appliance drinks, burns or plugs into has to be roughed in before the cabinets cover the wall, and it has to land where a cabinet is not.
None of this changes the cabinet work, but all of it changes where the cabinets can go. Mark every service on your wall elevation before you order, and the install becomes carpentry instead of improvisation. Gas, pressurised water and 240-volt circuits stay with the licensed trades — that is the deal that keeps the rest of the job yours.
24–30″ above a gas cooktop and 20–24″ above electric or induction, measured from the cooking surface to the bottom of the hood. Lower than that is a heat and head-clearance risk; much higher and the hood stops capturing the plume. Follow the model’s own manual where it differs — a professional-style hood or a very tall ceiling can change the number.
Plan a 36″ wide by 70–72″ high opening for a standard full-size fridge, and check the actual model’s sheet before you order. Leave roughly ½–⅝″ each side, 1″ on top and 2″ behind for airflow and the cord — only built-in models are designed to be squeezed in tighter than that.
You don’t — drilling the underside of stone risks cracking the slab. Use the dishwasher’s side-mount brackets and screw them into the cabinet sides beside the machine. If yours is top-mount only, a side-mount retrofit bracket is stocked at any appliance parts counter. Use short screws so nothing comes through the inside of the neighbouring cabinet.
30″ from the cooking surface to combustible material is the general code figure, reduced to 24″ where the cabinet underside is properly protected. A listed range hood or an over-the-range microwave is certified to sit closer, which is why it may be mounted where a plain cabinet may not.
Most manufacturers specify the top of the microwave at least 66″ from the finished floor, which leaves about 13″ between the cooktop and the bottom of the unit. Use the paper template in the box — the wall plate, the cabinet screw holes and the exhaust knock-out are all model specific.
Yes. An OTR microwave hangs from a bracket on the wall and bolts up through the bottom of the cabinet above it, so that cabinet is structural, not decorative. A short 12–18″ wall cabinet is the usual answer, and it also hides the duct.
Ducted is meaningfully better: grease, smoke, odour and humidity leave the house. Recirculating filters the air and blows it back into the room, which handles some smoke and smell and none of the moisture. Choose recirculating when there is genuinely no path outside; otherwise duct it, keep the run short and straight, and never reduce the duct size the hood asks for.

Because it is too close to a wall, a tall cabinet or a corner. Most fridge doors must open past 90°, often nearer 115°, before the interior drawers will clear the door gasket. The standard fix is a 2–3″ filler between the fridge and whatever is beside it — plan it in rather than discovering it on delivery day.
Often not, or not a full stack. A drop-in cooktop hangs down into the cabinet with its burner box and controls, and many models specify a minimum clear depth below. Check the appliance sheet before ordering that cabinet — a common compromise is a false drawer front on top with a shallow drawer beneath.
Yes, and it ships with every free-standing range. It screws to the floor or the back wall and stops the range tipping forward if weight goes on an open oven door — the scenario it exists for is a child standing on that door. It is a four-minute job and it is required.
A 30″ sink base suits most single bowls and a 36″ base takes a large single or a double. Size it against the bowl dimension rather than the sink’s overall size, and leave about an inch of margin. Frameless boxes help here — you get the full internal width.
