What matters more than the name is thickness and edge quality: a dense, fully-finished ¾″ panel with clean banded edges outlasts a thin, chip-prone one whatever it is made of. You pick which core the box is built from — plywood (PW) or particleboard (PB) — and that single choice is what decides which back-panel row above applies to your kitchen. Everything else is the same either way: the same ¾″ panel, the same melamine on both faces, the same matching PVC edge.
Three things in that table matter more than they look. Melamine on both faces means the panel is sealed inside and out, so there is no raw board waiting to drink up a spill — and it is why the cabinet interiors are finished rather than bare. PVC edge banding in a matching colour is the detail that separates a box that still looks new in ten years from one with swollen, chipped front edges: on a frameless cabinet that banded edge is the visible front of the carcass. And the ¾″ panel is what a hinge plate and a drawer runner screw into — thin sides are where cheap cabinets fail first.
Why only the drawer’s bottom and back are board: the drawer’s sides are the runners. A modern drawer box is built from a steel drawer-side system — the metal side wall and the undermount slide are one engineered part — and the 16 mm panels drop into it to form the floor and the back. That is why a drawer pulls all the way out without sagging, and why the drawer box is far stronger than four bits of board screwed together.
The back panel is ⅛–¼″ thin — it carries nothing. North-American cabinets come two ways. A framed cabinet has a solid wood frame across the front of the box; the door sits on or in that frame. A frameless (European) cabinet has no frame — the ¾″ box edge is the front, and the door covers the whole thing (full overlay).
Frameless means bigger drawer boxes, easier reach, and a seamless modern look when cabinets sit side by side — at the cost of demanding a truly level install, because there is no frame to hide an out-of-square box behind. (That is why the install chapter is fussy about levelling.)
