Two runs meet, ten cubic feet of storage sits in the middle, and there is no straight line to reach it. Every solution ever invented is the same bargain in a different dress.
Somewhere in nearly every kitchen there is a square about two feet on a side where two runs of cabinets meet, and nobody has been to the back of it since the fondue set went in. It holds about as much as a dishwasher does. What defeats people is not that it is hidden — it is that it sits at right angles to your arm, and no amount of wanting changes the geometry. Every corner solution ever sold is the same trade dressed differently: how much of that volume you keep, against how much of it you can actually get at.
Base cabinets are 24″ deep. Where two base runs meet at 90° they overlap in a square 24″ by 24″, and with a box 30″ tall sitting on its feet that square is almost exactly ten cubic feet of storage.
Now measure the reach. From the front of the box to the far corner is the diagonal of that square: about 34″, and closer to 36″ from the front edge of the countertop. A typical adult arm is around 25″ from shoulder to fingertip. So the back of a base corner is not something you reach into. It is something you climb into, shoulder first, cheek on the counter edge.
There is a second problem, and it comes before storage. The two runs cannot both have the corner. One box has to stop 24″ short of the other wall, or one box has to give up part of its own face to the run crossing in front of it. How you resolve that is the fork in the road, and everything below comes out of it.
What they search at midnight “blind corner cabinet solutions” — usually after the plan is drawn, when one wall has come up six inches long and the corner is the only place left to lose them.
Best when you want the most cubic inches for the fewest special parts
One box runs into the corner and the neighbouring run crosses in front of it, hiding part of its face. That hidden part gives it its name, and it is why a blind cabinet’s label carries two numbers rather than one: a 36″ box that consumes 42″ of wall, because a filler has to pull it off the corner so both doors can open. Plan with the second number or the run will not fit — the same arithmetic runs through the sizes chapter.
Do the subtraction and you can see what you are buying. Of that 36″ of box, the perpendicular run covers 24″ — its own depth. What is left facing you is a door roughly 15 to 18″ wide, and everything past it is reached by feel. A plain blind corner with one fixed shelf is the cheapest storage in the kitchen and the least used, in the same breath.
The handedness catches people every week. Which side is blind depends on which run crosses in front, and a blind cabinet cannot be turned round on site — door, hidden panel and mechanism are all built to one hand. Decide which wall the door faces, and say it out loud before ordering.
Then the hardware, which is what turns the box from a cave into a cupboard. Two families are worth knowing. The swing-out is a pair of kidney-shaped shelves: the front one pivots out through the door opening, the rear one follows on an arm. The two-stage pull-out is the better-behaved cousin — a front basket slides straight out on runners, and the rear basket swings after it into the space the first one left.
Both buy access with volume, and the exchange rate is worth stating plainly. Everything travels out through that 15 to 18″ opening, so every tray is narrower than the cavity it lives in, and the mechanism needs clear air to swing. You keep roughly two-thirds of the cavity as shelf you can see, and throw the rest away. Still a far better deal than keeping all of it and using none of it — but a deal, not a free upgrade.
The corner cabinet is the datum for both walls: every other box inherits its position, its height and its plumb. Get it level on its adjustable feet and screwed solidly to the wall before anything goes beside it — because the moment the neighbouring cabinet lands, you cannot reach the feet or the back fixings at the blind end again. A loaded corner pull-out is heavy and cantilevered. It will find any box set slightly out of level, and it will report it as a door that swings shut on its own.
The other way to resolve a corner is to stop hiding anything. An angled or diagonal base puts a 45° face across the corner with a single door on it, so you stand facing the corner and reach straight in along the diagonal instead of groping sideways. Its close relative, the easy-reach, does the same job with an L-shaped face and a door on the corner itself.
What they cost is wall. An angled corner base typically eats about 36″ on each wall — two cabinets’ worth of run, gone, in a room that may not have it to give. In a galley or a small L that is often the whole argument, and it is why the blind box survives despite being worse to use.
Into either box you can drop a carousel — the lazy Susan. In an angled box it is a full round tray, or a round tray with a wedge cut out for the door. In a square blind box it is a D-shaped or kidney tray on a centre post. Trays run 28 to 32″ across, and here is the part nobody says out loud: a round tray in a square box can only ever use about four-fifths of the plan area, and in practice less, because it must clear the door on its way round. The four corners it leaves behind are precisely where lids, small tins and the odd rolling onion go to jam the rotation.
A corner drawer is two fronts joined at 90°, running out on the diagonal that bisects the corner. It is the only corner solution that behaves like the rest of the kitchen: nothing hides, nothing rotates, you pull and everything comes to you and you look down into it. If the corner is somewhere you actually stand and work, this is the option that stops the corner being a corner.
Four honest costs. Volume: a trapezoidal drawer box inside a square footprint loses both side wedges and everything behind the deepest drawer, so you keep roughly half of the ten cubic feet. Wall: like an angled base, it wants about 36″ on each run. Services: no sink and no hob above corner drawers, because the trap or the burner box lands exactly where the drawer wants to travel. And least discussed — opening one puts cabinetry into both aisles at once. In a galley under 42″ wide that is a shin bruise waiting to happen.
Then there is the option nobody puts in a brochure: decide the corner is not worth having. Run one wall into the corner with ordinary full-width cabinets, stop the other run short, and close it with a filler or a finished end panel. The void behind stays a void.
What you buy is not nothing. Standard boxes on both walls, no hand to get wrong, no mechanism to go stiff, no argument about door swings — and somewhere for the stack pipe, the gas line or the structural post that is so often exactly in that corner. What you lose is the ten cubic feet, which in plenty of kitchens were never going to be used anyway.
The bit people forget The countertop still has to cross the void. — A rail or a strip of ply screwed between the two boxes carries it. Settle this before the counter is templated, not on the day the stone arrives.

Wall cabinets are 12″ deep, which changes the whole argument. The diagonal to the back corner of an upper is about 17″ — inside arm’s length, standing up, eyes roughly level with the shelf. A blind wall cabinet is genuinely usable in a way a blind base never is. It is where the large platters, the casserole lids and the vases you use twice a year should live, and it needs no mechanism at all.
Four moves at an upper corner, all of them defensible:
One installation note that only bites at corners. Hang the corner cabinet first, for the same reason as below: once the next box is up you cannot get a driver to the fixings at the blind end. Our boxes carry three horizontal mounting rails in the back panel, so there is a screw line at three heights rather than one — get the corner plumb, level and tight, and both runs follow it.
Here is the mechanism behind every corner that does not work. Our cabinets are frameless with full-overlay doors, so the door covers the box almost to its edge — uninterrupted fronts, no face frame stealing width. It also means that when you swing that door to 90°, the leaf stands proud of the box by its own thickness, directly in the path of whatever is beside it. At an inside corner, that is the perpendicular run’s door: also full overlay, also proud, also wearing a pull.
Count what is competing for the space. A door leaf about ¾″ thick. A knob projecting roughly 1¼ to 1½″, or a bar pull 1½ to 2″ with its bases. That is why an inside corner needs a filler, and why 3″ is the number that works — 2″ survives on the drawing and fails the first time somebody specifies bar pulls. Handle projection is a decision, not a detail.
None of this needs a designer to catch. It needs a drawing honest enough to show door swings, and twenty minutes of opening things in it.
Three situations turn an ordinary corner into a problem, and one of them is a decision people make on purpose.
A sink in the corner is usually a mistake. You stand at 45° with your hips into the corner of the counter and an elbow over each run, which is a stance nobody chooses twice. There is no straight landing space either side unless both runs are generous. The dishwasher has to live on one run or the other, so its open door drops across the corner and you load across your own body. The plumbing has to rise where two walls meet, which is where the framing is usually doubled. And the deep triangle of counter behind the tap becomes the place where everything quietly accumulates. Below, the cupboard stops being storage and becomes a plumbing cupboard.
Two cases earn it. One: the window is in the corner — some houses put it there, and standing at a sink looking at plaster in order to have a window elsewhere is a poor trade. Two: a genuinely small kitchen, where a corner sink frees both straight runs for uninterrupted prep instead of chopping each one in half.
Then do it properly: a wide angled base rather than a squeezed one, one large bowl instead of two small, a tap tall enough to clear the corner backsplash return, and the acceptance that the dishwasher lives a cabinet away. Whether the plumbing can actually be run into that corner is a question for a plumber, not a drawing.
A dishwasher never goes hard against a corner. Its door drops about 24″ into the room and lands straight across the corner cabinet, so you cannot open the corner and there is nowhere to stand while you load — loading happens facing the machine, not sidling up to it. Put a filler and at least one cabinet between the two. If the corner holds a pull-out, remember that the pull-out and the dishwasher door want the same floor at the same time, which is exactly when your arms are full of plates.
A fridge beside a corner is a hinge problem before it is a storage problem. A fridge is deeper than the cabinets — commonly 30 to 36″ once the door and handle are counted — so it stands proud of the run and throws the corner into shadow, which alone makes a blind corner harder to use. The real trouble is the swing: a fridge door has to open well past 90° before the crisper drawers will come out, and hinged toward a corner it simply will not. Put a filler or a finished end panel between the fridge and the corner run, and hinge the door away from the corner if the room allows it. The appliance clearances are collected here.
There is no single right answer, and anyone who gives you one has not seen your room. There are, however, four situations that decide it cleanly.

Heavy things you use whole and use rarely: stock pots, the stand mixer, the slow cooker, baking trays on edge, a nest of pans. Nothing that comes as a set you have to pick through, nothing that goes off, and nothing you need with wet hands in a hurry. On a carousel, nothing taller than the gap to the tray above — usually 10 to 12″ — so cereal boxes and tall bottles belong elsewhere.
If the corner is in the part of the kitchen where you actually work, yes. They are the only corner solution people use daily without thinking about it, because everything comes to you and you look down into it.
