It will show you your kitchen in six colours before the kettle boils. It will also show you a 34-inch base cabinet, a sink with nowhere to drain, and a walkway nobody could walk down — with total confidence.

An image model has never held a tape measure. It has seen a million photographs of kitchens and learned, very well, what kitchens look like — which is a completely different thing from knowing that base cabinets come in three-inch increments, that a dishwasher door needs somewhere to land, or that a sink in an island means a drain under the floor. Understand that one distinction and AI becomes genuinely useful. Miss it and you will fall in love with a kitchen nobody can build.

The short answer

Three separate things get called AI kitchen design: image generators that redraw a photo, layout generators that place real cabinets, and assistants that edit a plan you already have. Only the last two produce something buildable. Free AI layout generation does exist — the Flip designer includes three AI designs a day on a free account — but most tools keep the generator behind the paid tier.

00 The confusion

Three different things are called “AI kitchen design”

They behave completely differently, and most of the disappointment comes from expecting one and being sold another.

  • Photo restyling — you upload a picture of your kitchen and it comes back with new cabinet colours, a different counter, another floor. The room is yours; the finishes are invented
  • Prompt-to-image — you describe a kitchen and it generates one from nothing. Beautiful, aspirational, and not your room in any sense
  • Layout generation — you give it your walls and openings and it proposes arrangements of real cabinets. The rarest of the three, and the only one that can produce something orderable

01 The good part

What AI is genuinely, unambiguously good at

It would be silly to be sniffy about this. There are jobs where an image model beats a human designer on speed by two orders of magnitude, and they are real jobs.

  • Killing an idea in ten seconds — you thought you wanted dark green with brass. Now you have seen it in your own room, and you do not. That is a genuinely useful ten seconds
  • Breaking a deadlock — two people who cannot agree on a colour will agree far faster in front of six versions of the same room than in front of a paint chip
  • Showing atmosphere — light, shadow, reflection and how a finish reads at seven in the evening. This is the thing a flat 3D view is worst at and an image model is best at
  • Reaching people who cannot read a plan — most of your household cannot see a kitchen in a floor plan, and are entitled to an opinion anyway
  • Iterating without cost — the twentieth variation is as cheap as the first, which no human designer’s afternoon can match
02 The quiet lies

Five things it gets wrong while looking confident

This is the important half. An image model has no idea what a cabinet is. It has seen a million photographs of kitchens and learned what kitchens tend to look like — which is a completely different skill from knowing that base cabinets come in 3″ increments.

  • Dimensions that do not survive a tape measureRestyled photos typically keep the general geometry of your room and quietly reshape the details. Cabinet widths drift, a run gains a few inches, a walkway narrows to something nobody could walk down.RuleNever take a measurement off an AI image. Ever. 03 The tell

How to spot a render that cannot be built

Look at these five places before you fall in love with an image. They are where generated kitchens give themselves away.

  • The gaps between doors — real cabinet reveals are consistent all the way along a run; generated ones wander
  • Inside corners — look for a door or drawer that would collide with the return wall, and for the filler that is usually missing
  • Handles and hinges — count them, and check they line up. Merged, floating or missing hardware is the classic tell
  • Where the counter meets the wall — look for a splashback that changes height, or a counter that passes through a window frame
  • Appliance openings — a fridge with no air gap, a dishwasher with no door clearance, a hood with no visible route out
04 The workflow

Use it in the right order and it stops lying

AI is a terrible architect and an excellent stylist. The workflow that works puts it where its strengths are and keeps it away from the numbers.

How we built AI into a kitchen tool without letting it invent kitchens

We are a cabinet company, so our constraint was simple: whatever the AI shows has to be the kitchen we can actually deliver. That ruled out the usual approach of describing a room to an image model and hoping.

Render Studio — AI renders, but of your real model

There is no prompt to write, which is the whole point. It renders what your 3D view is showing, reading the finishes you already picked from real catalogues, so the image is an interpretation of your design rather than a new invention. Frame the shot, and it can take several angles so it has more of the room to work from. It comes back in about half a minute to a minute and a half.

Straight about the limits: renders carry a small Flip mark, the AI extras need you to be signed in, and an image — ours included — is an interpretation. Check any finish against a real sample before you commit, particularly whites, greys and anything with a strong sheen.

What to use AI for tonight

  • “I have no idea what style I want.” Any photo restyler. Generate ten, delete nine, keep the one that stops you.
  • “We cannot agree on a colour.” AI, absolutely — but on top of your real layout, so you are arguing about the same kitchen.
  • “Will this layout work?” Not AI. That is a dimensional question; use a planner with real cabinet sizes and check the clearances.
  • “What will it cost?” Not AI either — a picture has no parts list. Price comes from a cabinet-by-cabinet plan.
  • “I want to show my family what we chose.” This is AI at its best: one good render carries a room in a way a plan never will.

Straight answers

Can AI design my kitchen?+

It can style one convincingly and it can propose arrangements, but on its own it cannot produce a buildable kitchen. Image models learn from photographs of kitchens, so they reproduce what kitchens look like rather than what cabinets are: sizes drift, clearances are ignored, and plumbing or venting is not considered. Use AI for look and feel, and a dimensional planner for the layout you will actually order.

Are AI kitchen design tools accurate?+

For appearance, very. For dimensions, no. A good restyler keeps the broad geometry of your room but reshapes details, and nothing in it understands walkway minimums, appliance rough openings or the increments cabinets are made in. Never scale a measurement off an AI image.

What is the difference between an AI render and a 3D render?+

A 3D render calculates an image from a model that has real dimensions, so what you see is what was drawn. An AI render generates an image that looks like a kitchen; unless it is conditioned on a real model, it can invent details that do not exist. The most useful combination is an AI render driven by an actual 3D design, so the atmosphere is generated but the kitchen underneath is real.

Can I use an AI photo of my kitchen to get a quote?+

No supplier can quote from an image, because there is no parts list behind it. A quote comes from a cabinet-by-cabinet plan: sizes, fillers, panels, hardware and countertop area. Take the AI image as a description of the look, and a dimensional plan as the thing to be priced.

Is there a free AI kitchen design tool?+

There are many free photo restylers, usually metered by how many high-resolution images you can export. What is rarer, and more useful, is AI attached to a real cabinet catalogue so that what it proposes can be ordered. Will AI replace kitchen designers?+

It has replaced the mood-board stage and a good part of the visualisation stage. What it has not touched is the part where somebody takes responsibility for the numbers: clearances, appliance specifications, structural and services constraints, and the order in which trades arrive. That is judgment, and it is the part people are actually paying for.

How do I tell if a kitchen render is real or AI-generated?+

Look at the gaps between doors, the inside corners, the hardware, where the counter meets the wall, and the appliance openings. Generated images wander on reveal gaps, forget the filler at corners, merge or float handles, and often show appliances with no clearance or a hood with no route out.

What is the right way to use AI when planning a renovation?+

In this order: measure the real room, build the layout in real cabinet sizes, then use AI for finishes, lighting and atmosphere on top of that plan, verify every finish against a physical sample, and order from the plan rather than the picture. Used that way it saves genuine time; used first, it produces a beautiful kitchen nobody can build.
